What the film is

The Dressmaker (2015) is an Australian drama directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, adapted from Rosalie Ham's 2000 novel. It's usually described as a revenge drama with comedy threaded through it — or, as the film's own marketing had it, “couture revenge”. It grossed well in Australia and became a streaming favorite for its performances and its gloriously sharp costume design.

The plot (spoiler-light)

In 1950s Australia, Myrtle “Tilly” Dunnage returns to the dusty town of Dungatar to care for her ailing mother. The town remembers her as the girl who was sent away for something terrible; Tilly can't remember doing it. Armed with a sewing machine and couture training from Paris, she starts transforming the townsfolk — and quietly digs into what really happened that night decades ago.

Expect: sweeping gown transformations, small-town cruelty played for both laughs and damage, a romance with Teddy (Hemsworth), a scene-stealing cross-dressing police sergeant (Weaving), and an ending people never stop talking about.

The novel behind it

The film adapts Rosalie Ham's 2000 novel. Ham grew up in a similar Australian wheat-belt town, and the book is darker than the film. An earlier, more literal film adaptation was made in 1988. If you want more after the movie, the novel is the natural next stop.

Is it connected to the 2026 Dressmaker game?

No. The sewing sim by Cozy Lives and Free Lives was created independently, inspired by real dressmaking, and has no connection to the film, the novel or their creators. The two simply share a name — see our Dressmaker game overview if that's what you were after.
